Happy International Women’s Day! In case you did not know, International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 every year to commemorate the movement for women’s rights. Today, I thought it would be good to give you a sneak-peek into an interview I did with documentary filmmaker Carla Reboucas and Ms. Gloria Payne-Banfield.
Carla is from Brazil and sails the world with her father and his crew capturing stories. Her crew berthed in Grenada for about a week to do some work on their boat before heading to Panama and then on to the Polynesian Islands. Whilst exploring the island, Carla had a chance encounter with my friend who is also a documentary filmmaker. They chatted for a while and never thought they’s see each other again. Fate had a different plan, and we ended up running into them at a restaurant later that day. She invited us to dinner on her boat the next day and they fed us the most amazing Brazilian food!! During dinner, Carla asked how easy it would be to interview women doing work to empower other women in Grenada. It was important for her to capture the stories of Grenadian women for the project she was working on. She told us that she would be sailing from Grenada to the French Polynesian islands and wanted to catch the stories of women change-makers and advocates in each port she stopped.
My friends started laughing at the coincidence of it all. We then arranged a date and time to meet, and I managed to rope in the amazing Gloria Payne-Banfield to share an inter-generational perspective on the topic. Gloria is a former senator, political party leader, permanent secretary, advocate for the rights of women and a local historian. Below is an excerpt of the longer 20 minute interview. The excerpt shows Gloria dispensing words of wisdom to me in an older generation to younger generation sort of way. Watch this space for the full length interview. I’m excited about seeing how Carla will piece together all the stories from her travels. It would be great to hear the stories and experiences of other woman around the world.
Happy International Women’s Day!

I love the sense of mentorship. I work in a school and have begun working with Black Girls Code to continue empowering young females. Our community needs MORE of this. Cheers to Women’s History Month!

Words of wisdom. I like that she pretty much said google doesn’t know everything, we need to be more thorough in our research.
